I just thought I'd let my readers know that I've succumbed to the Dark Side*:
It's been about 10 years since I last played an MMORPG. WoW brings me back to my days of hunting ratlings for hunks of cheese in The Realm Online and beta testing Everquest. (And somewhat less happily to the days of spending hours chopping wood to build shields to sell for armor and weapons in Ultima Online, which were ultimately looted from my corpse when I was killed by a chicken or hunted and murdered by player-killers like "Lord CrackHead." Now there was a broken game if there ever was one. Ugh.)
(*And it turns out they don't have cookies, but they do have Crunchy Spider** Surprise.)
(**Seriously, I'm loving the game, but the biggest thing I could fault it on is lack of creativity with their monsters. Seems like no matter what race I've tried, it always comes down to fighting spiders sooner or later...)

. . . . .
Ach, me and the wife have been playing WoW for years. It doesn't matter what level you are. Even at 85, there's always more bloody spiders to kill.
ReplyDeleteAsk Darryl about his experience with Ultima Online, my favorite highlight involves him getting killed by a sheep. We, as a guild, also moved into the Realm after AOL's original Neverwinter Nights was taken down, but never really took off there. Some of us were in Everquest for a long time too, but again, not me. I never really did a lot of online gaming after oNWN, until Bioware NWN, and that wasn't really an MMO. I used to run a pretty cool persistent world though, Norseworld.
ReplyDelete@Brian: That's not what I was hoping to hear. I was hoping that the spider thing would be less of an issue at higher levels. (Although I don't know exactly why I was hoping that. I have played two characters up to their mid-30's since starting the game a couple weeks ago, and there's no sign of being spider-free yet...)
ReplyDeleteHonestly, how hard is it to come up with a few more types of monsters? Sheesh...
Most Old-School players I know are perfectly fine with World Of Warcraft, they just don't want their tabletop games to attempt to emulate it.
ReplyDelete@Jagatai: "...my favorite highlight involves him getting killed by a sheep."
ReplyDeleteThat sounds about right for UO. :P IIRC, I was repeatedly killed by chickens and pigs. Most often, though, I fell victim to PKers. That game was a frustrating nightmare - it seemed to me at the time that you either had to be a sadist (PKer) or masochist (the rest of us) to enjoy it.
@Joshua: I would definitely fall into the non-emulation camp.
ReplyDeleteMy wife sucked me into Wow six months ago, and I'm having a great time with it. I spend most of my time dicking around and RPing*, which I think disappoints my wife (who is a serious raider,) but it's a great way to unwind at the end of the day.
ReplyDelete*Despite popular opinion, not all RPers in WoW are creepers, but they are out there so be careful about random RPers.
Why not DDO instead of WoW?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous: Tried DDO a couple years ago, and didn't care for it. Nothing sticks out as to why - it just didn't float my boat.
