Another Day Older and Deeper in Debt

So, as a birthday present to my readers (it's my b-day, but you get the present - see what a great guy I am?) here's the latest iteration of my Dark World map. This is a grayscale version, but I'm still toying with other possibilities (a funky color version, a la the Divine Right map, or a monotone version). The map still doesn't feel complete to me, so I'm reluctant to call this the "final" product. Let's just call it the "close-to-final" product.

. . . . .

  1. Looks cool! But I do agree; something about it does feel a little off. Good luck with the tweaking. It does seem very close.

Happy birthday to us, as well! [Scorpio bump]

  2. Very nice. I like the cross between old school and new. It makes me think of the glossy greyscale maps that turned up in the late 3.5 S&SS products. Hexes are awesome.

  3. Looks good, but I think it needs a few more locations just to the left of the centre bottom. if those are plains (and I think they are) there could be a few more settlements or ruins in there.

  4. Thanks! And happy birthday, fellow Scorp!

  7. Happy Birthday. Dark World is shaping up nicely.

  8. Thanks everyone!

@ArmChairGeneral: I used Adobe Illustrator to "vectorize" some of the elements (hex grid, location icons) and Photoshop to do everything else.

  9. Ah, but are game maps ever truly done?

  10. @Cranky: Probably not, but I tend to consider my maps completed once they've been placed before the players' eyes. After that, I'll only consider changes if the map is going to be used for a different group of players - which used to happen often enough to be worth mentioning 20 or so years ago, but nowadays doesn't happen at all. (Speaks volumes about my current social circle - or, rather, my current lack thereof.)

  11. Very nice? but rivers more 'fluid' rather than angular maybe?

Oh, anybody else notice the 'Shale Knot Pass'? ...groan

Looks like a very nice place to go rampaging in. But whatever game system you use for it, make sure you ask yourself the all-important design question:

    IS IT BALANCED?!

    :P

  12. This looks really good - and it is reminiscent of the Divine Right map - what software did you use to draw this in?

  13. @chuck: Thanks. :D I drew a lot of inspiration from the Divine Right map. (I never picked up that game, although I recall looking at it regularly in the semi-local Kay-Bee Toys. More's the shame...)

In answer to your question: as I mentioned above, I used Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to make the map.

  14. Absolutely awesome map! It does feel very "divine right"-ish, but that is a great thing.
